With the LSI Self-Study Programme, will I learn "formal" Bahasa Indonesia or every-day "street" language"?
AT LSI WE DO NOT TEACH “FORMAL INDONESIAN” AND WE DO NOT TEACH VERNACULAR (“SLANG”) INDONESIAN.
LSI delivers instruction in “STANDARD” INDONESIAN, which is applicable in all situations – social and professional.
Slang Indonesian is something that our local students may pick up “on the street” as they discover ways to “scale back” their language when dealing with vendors, parking attendants, etc. But the job of the School is to ensure that all students learn standard Indonesian so they do not embarrass themselves by using “street language” in the everyday contexts of their lives – at the office, at hotels and restaurants, at conferences, etc.
There are hundreds of different languages spoken across Indonesia. Why should I choose to learn Bahasa Indonesia?
BAHASA INDONESIA IS THE SOLE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF INDONESIA.
Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country, with more than 750 native languages spoken across its 17,000 islands. What unifies the country is its single national language – Bahasa Indonesia.
In infancy, Indonesian children learn the native language of their island region, but, they enter school, all communication is in Bahasa Indonesia. To be functional in the country, everyone must be able to communicate in the national language.
How long will it take to learn to speak Bahasa Indonesia?
You may make considerable progress in just weeks, or you may still be struggling with the language after several months. It all depends on your commitment as a learner.
Is Bahasa Indonesia easy to learn?
YES, INDONESIAN IS RELATIVELY EASY AT THE BEGINNER LEVEL.
- Unlike other Asian languages, Bahasa Indonesia uses the Latin alphabet ;
- Pronunciation is generally straightforward for English speakers (as it is not a tonal language like Chinese); and
- It’s lack of complicated grammatical structures (such as verb tenses) make mastery of simple conversation relatively painless.
BUT DON’T BE DECEIVED. Standard Indonesian is as complex as any other language, and attaining true proficiency requires dedication and effort.
